Dark Music Picks: Betty Bones

Recently I found out about a band called Hellcat and the Prowl. A band that is quite a bit different than my current love but that didn’t stop me from loving them upon my first listen; don’t you love when that happens? This song is upbeat, catchy and interesting. But that’s up to you, what do you think?

Where Do I Find Kinderwhore Dresses?

It’s not as easy to find beautiful dresses suited for Kinderwhore after the nineties. It seems that our dreams for a closet full of vintage, whorable dresses was not meant to be, and that they have all been snatched up. But there are still some sources that if you search well enough, you can find that perfect fit.

Tumblr – Kinderwhore Shrine

  • Vintage dresses are the way the original Kinderwhores dressed!
  • You can find great old-fashioned and vintage dressed at Thrift-stores. A great thing to do to older-fashioned dresses (I wouldn’t advise cutting vintage) would be to alter them to the your favoured length and/or change-up detailing.
  • Regular stores often have baby-doll dresses (okay, maybe not as many as when the Spice Girls were popular) and the classic black dress with a peter pan collar is a staple that you can find almost anywhere.
  • Custom stores like: My Best Sunday Dress.
  • Ebay/etsy! Etsy can be very expensive since it is mostly vintage and custom made but has gorgeous and unique pieces. I’ve had the best results while searching the key word “dolly dress”.
  • Perfect patterns can be made from older children’s dress patterns! You will just have to convert the sizing. EBay is great for very cheap patterns.

Dressing Darkly For The Holidays

Are you in love with Christmas? I know that a lot of Goths dread the end of Halloween but I’m sure there are a lot that enjoy it! I’m off and on with the Christmas spirit but it’s always nice to place some Christmas cheer in your outfits. It’s always a great conversation starter.

  • Striped stockings! Go all out with a little red and green or a bit simpler with candycane stockings. I think the candy caned stockings would look magical with a otherwise Ice-Goth styled outfit.
  • Red or green lips! Or both at the same time.
  • Christmas make up in general!
  • A black Santa hat goes with everything!
  • Dye your hair some festive colours!
  • There’s something intimately Christmas about tulle skirts, or even tutus.
  • Take the time to dress up Victorian-esque! Top hats and bustles skirts are always appropriate in Christmas – particularly if you carol. But you’d probably die wearing a corset in the Australian heat.
  • Hair Bows! Or bows every where!
  •  Religious imagery, like red jeweled Cross pendants!
  • Cloaks. Must I say more? There’s always a good reason to wear a cloak, cape or caplet. Christmas, is one!

Tips For Dressing Alternatively at School

As a full time Goth that has been as such throughout school this is something I have LOTS of experience with, especially since in Australian schools (obviously not exclusively) it’s almost always uniform only. Considering my uniform, until this year of being a senior, was yellow and brown, may I repeat yellow and brown, you could consider me an expert.

Just as a warning, I went to a public school. Most private school’s would have more strict rules, which means some of this might not apply to you.

You have no idea how long it took me to find the name of this film
after forgetting it. FYI it’s A Haunting Hour – Source
  • If you’re as unlucky as me with your school colours being terrible to start with I would focus on black and silver everything. You wont want to clash with red or blue but if you do add colour, take a look at the colour wheel first so you don’t end up clashing. For instance if your uniform is part purple, adding black and purple stockings wouldn’t be terrible.
  • Learn your school rules and stick to them. Then bend them slowly and slowly. My teachers would always be on my case while I wore striped stockings, until they gave up but that’s not what we’re aiming for! Teachers almost always can’t say anything about ripped plain stockings as long as they aren’t overboard but to start try sticking to plain black stockings or socks. If you have a rule about wearing only white socks, it’s not the end of the world. They can be delightfully gothy if you work in enough ghostly style.
  • Bracelets, studs and accessories. Of course you’ll want to save those spiked collars for the weekend, most of the time. My school has rules that all spiked objects must be confiscated so beware! Ear studs are generally great as most schools don’t allow elaborate piercing jewellery. Try to stick to simple jewellery though and nothing too over the top. You wouldn’t want to have your dangly earring’s dripping with Hydrochloric Acid, would you?
  • It’s almost never appropriate to wear a corset to school. I would NEVER trust such an expensive piece of clothing with a bunch of teenagers that probably wont understand the amount of money it can cost nor care. Don’t risk it, unless you have money to just throw away. Besides this it’s generally not practical. As an art student I spend a lot of time drilling and sawing, which would be dangerous in a corset.
  • Take this time to experiment with your hair. What’s a better time than when you don’t have to worry about discrimination in the work place (or other such place). The rules tend to be reasonably slack and you have your own school full of critics. Not to mention it’s an easy and fun and easy way to add something dark or personal to your style.
  • Cosmetics can be a touchy subject. It’s good to remember that something styles as simple as retro winged eye-liner can be just as good as a dark, smokey eye with tons of eye-liner. This is also something you might want to experiment with at school. I’ve only had one moment when my school has told me to wash my make up off and that was when an ex-friend had done it into the messiest, sluttiest horribly done thing you could ever imagine. Trust me, I wanted to wash that shit off my face. Try and stick to something simple and/or classic. Don’t go overboard and as long as it’s well done no one would probably care – so that means lots of practice!
  • Personally, when I first started dressing eccentrically at school I was tormented for a while. But after a while a few things happened:
    • I became better at dressing eccentrically.
    • I learnt my boundaries.
    • I was used to the abuse.
    • People eventually became used to me. Or became bored.

Red and Black Week: A DASH-ing Outfit

The title isn’t me being egotistic it’s a terrible pun. I’m in so much of a rush today, well tonight here. It’s seven and I still need to do lots of housework and get started on assessments and homework. Ick, I feel terrible and can’t wait for the weekend. Tomorrows Friday though. I make it a habit to play and dance around to in joy, Friday! I’m in love, every Friday. No matter how cliché’ I enjoy it.

    Anyway, onto the outfit!

    Outfit:

    Blouse: Thrifted.
    Cardigan: Jocks and Socks.
Skirt: Bodyline – costume section actually but it doesn’t lack quality.
    Stockings: Unknown.
    Shoes: Dr Marten.

Ironically, I look rather terrible but as I said, dash! The point of this outfit was to show off my new pleated, tartan skirt. I really adore it though the sizes were terribly misleading and way too large.
Best wishes and happy Red and Black Week,
    -SaryWalrus

    The Fairytale is No More

The Fairytale is No More (Fairytale Nevermore)

    Nihilistic deviations.
    A shrouded fate.
    Crumpled face.
    Black, smeared deviant.
    Cannibalism of the soul.
    A lone horrific fate.
    I AM FATAL.
    I AM CRYPTIC.
    I am nevermore.
    No god,
    no love,
    no blood
    to solve this self.
    No petty thief –
    protagonists rule.
    The protagonist is destined
    for the noose.
    My own self-centred story.
    Selfish; senseless.
    Perish! -the protagonist?
    At the dawn of night.
    The castle is gone.
There are no witches to burn.
    No bread crumbs leading home.
    Leaving my twisted nevermore.
