Four Famous Trad-Goth Songs I’d Forgotten I LOVE

Favourite bands last no longer than a few months for me because I end up listening to them non-stop until I can take it no longer. Which is why I’ve been trying to find some newer Goth-Rock stuff (see. Goth or Not?). I fell so hard for classic post-punk that we needed some time apart. That time is over! Somehow some of my favourites found their way back into my favourite playlists and I’m fully immersed into my favourite genre. But who brought me back from the dead?

Bela Legosi’s Dead

A while back I posted Five Killer Bauhaus Songs that aren’t Bela Legosi’s Dead. But there are so many reason that this song is so renowned within the subculture. One, is because it is typically seen as the epitome of the Goth sound (even though Bauhaus certainly wasn’t the first Goth band). The second reason is because it’s just so fucking good.

Black Sun

I’ve never been a fan of Dead Can Dance; their sound has gone through so many variations that a mere mortal such as myself can never find the one I like! If you can find me some other songs similar to Black Sun I might marry you. (Probably not, though. Sorry.)

Temple of Love

Certainly the most dance-worthy (in my opinion) of this list, but no less famous trad-goth tunes. I’m not sure what else I can say about this. You better have a listen, and then tell me what you think.

Last Beat of my Heart

Who could forget Siouxsie the Banshees on a trad-Goth list? When I clicked onto Coffin Kitsch’s The Last Beat of My Heart : UK 82 in which she outlines her favourite bands of UK 82 Punk. Though I haven’t delved too far into that genre the name alone was enough to get my yerning for some more Siouxsie. This song is heart wrenchingly catching, semi-military sound inspired and generally beautiful.

Have you ever had a band or a song rekindle your love for anything?

Oufit Post: Misfits Shorts, Winged Liner, Alterna-Blasphemy

Guess who bought some new shorts? I’ve actually acquired quite a few new things since the last time I posted an outfit post. Hopefully I can showcase some of them during my time off. You guess still like outfit posts, right?

I’m not too fond of Saint Peters cross (actually I didn’t notice it was there) but you’ve gotta’ love the Misfits.

What’s better than wearing a new comfy cardigan on a rainy day? When I woke up I didn’t know if I could get out of bed but getting dressed helped a tonne. Today was just a lazy day at home, enjoying the holidays free from homework, exams and all those little stressful things (that hit me super hard).

Outfit: Cardigan: Boohoo.com, Shorts: Visage ‘n’ Vice Boutique, Shirt: Gift,
Stockings: Anonymous, Shoes: Cotton On, Thigh Highs: Sock Store.

Yes, I did buy pre-decorated shorts but I’m not ashamed since they weren’t pretty inexpensive – I bought them at Supanova this past weekend which apparently aren’t on the website – and I genuinely like them! Those pockets have to be fixed though, they just look plain silly hanging so low.

During my break I’ve been practicing my winged eye-liner a lot and obsessing over make up. I can’t wait until some of my new brushes, pallets and foundation come!

I’m only wearing eye make up here because psh, I’m not leaving the house.

The little fellow below wanted to say hello (how many ‘oh’ sounds could I fit in a sentence?). It was pouring with rain and flooding all over town today so, I’m guessing he just wanted some shelter

What are your thoughts of pre-ripped/printed/studded things? Is it alternative-person blasphemy?

Also, you guys should check out a YouTube channel called The Gothic Bats, it has great (and good quality) make up tips for all. But you may have to skip a head a bit on some videos since he talks a lot.

Bere-ted Punk Outfit: Leapard Print, High Waisted Denim and Leather Jacket

It’s been a long time since I last posted an outfit post. I’ve been pushing through Uni using up all of my basic outfits. So, it was about time I attempted to use some creativity up in this Punk inspired outfit – based around my new leather jacket and other new pieces I bought for my birthday last week!

This is the leather jacket that I ended up with after my year-long search and this quest here. My partner bought me it for my birthday and it’s close to perfect! The fit is just as slim as I wanted, the length seems great as far as I can tell and the feel is amazingly soft but still realistic.

Beret: EBay, Scarf: Thrifted, Necklace: EBay, Shirt: Supanova
Jacket: SheInside, Shorts: Thrifted, Stockings: Anonymous, Shoes: Doc Martens

My hair is terrible today and hopefully, within the next week will be ‘fixed’. But you guys will see that when it comes! In the meanwhile I threw on this beret that I bought from a generic EBay store. I’m finally getting around to adding more accessories like hats, scarves and earrings and I’m officially waiting around for winter!

Are you guys waiting around for a season change? Have you ever fallen for a piece of clothing after years of wanting it?

Outfit Post: Interview And/Or Professional Goth

Recently, I’ve been running around catching trains and buses to get to house viewings and trying to find somewhere to move. During this I’ve been dressing move covertly than I usually would – adding in simple colours, taking away the rips (boo!), while keeping my personal style still very obvious. It’s definitely been an experience. Dressing down doesn’t always have to be dreaded and you certainly don’t have to hide your true-self; there’s no need to throw away your layered-skirts for blue-jeans.

Stockings: Secondhand – Shoes: Cotton On – Bag: Thrifted

These photo’s were taken at the train-station after we missed our train by five minutes. I swear this year has not been my year at all. Though I did have the company of my my friend – the lovely person taking my photo is the same person that designed and drew my header, Xara.

Cardigan: Secondhand – Blouse: ROMWE – Skirt: Kmart

I’ve attempted to add in some colour (even though it’s red) just to get people wondering. Even when someone isn’t dressed particularly alternative but is in head to toe black they either think high fashion or Goth – adding a completely colourful item should get people wondering instead.

Abandoning my ripped stockings was another point but I decided to keep my hair uncovered since I didn’t want to be completely untrue (plus my partner was very adamant that I be truthful). If I do find a place to live (Oh man, I hope soon!) I don’t want them to be shocked when they come for an assessment to find a completely different person.

This is the dream cardigan that I’ve been looking for for years, unfortunately it’s in red rather than black. But at least I’m a step closer by knowing exactly what I want! I can imagine this one will be really great for layering with in winter; I can’t wait until the weather cools down.

Do you change your entire style for days that you have to dress ‘appropriately’? How do you dress down your regular style?

Outfit Post: Studs, Kinderwhore, A GothCat And Unfortunately Ripped Stockings

Today was cold, which means an outfit post! Happily I’m home and I don’t have to suffer from “nothing to wear” since I’m now accustom to dressing with a fraction of my wardrobe. Instead I sit around for hours complaining about my boring hair! But anyway! This outfit wasn’t really inspired by anything. I took the blouse as the main piece and worked from there.

Yeaaaaah. I’m not actually a diva.

 Outfit:

Blouse: Thrifted.
Skirt: Cotton On.
Stockings: Anonymous.
Shoes: Doc Marten.
Belt: Boohoo.com.
Socks: Anonymous.

For some reason my stockings decided to shred themselves. This morning while pulling them up, since they are rather tight, my long nails cut right into one of the legs. That one cut spread to more and more (they are so much worse now than in the picture). Next while dragging my laptop across my lap it tore into the other side which led to another torn up leg. Luckily I have seven more pairs exactly like them!

The fabric of this blouse is rather shiny but it definitely traps the heat inside. It was actually the details that I fell for – particularly the pin-tucked breast and buttons that make me think of Courtney Love. Plus, those sleeves!

Spooky’s own little nest made from plant clippings and branches.

Unfortunately the GothCat isn’t Chance (damn! Check him out here, he has an awesome blog!) but my favourite cat, Spooky. At first she was a bit weary of the camera but she came around after checking it out. Don’t be fooled she can be an evil little cat that likes to tear birds apart and get cranky if you pet her too much – we blame it on hormones after getting desexed.

Eventually she came to give me a cuddle!

I’m sorry about the stream of outfit posts. I’m not yet back into the motions of home yet. There will be some actually informative posts soon.

Outfit Post: Everyday Witchy Look with Halloween Makeup

When I say ‘witchy’ I don’t mean any disrespect to Pagans or other such religions. This look with the pointed shoes and laid back fabric just lends itself in my mind to that kind of imagery. This is something I’ve been wearing a lot as an everyday thing.

I am in love with this dress. It’s so easy to wear, especially on warm days when you don’t want tight fitting clothes smothering you. It’s pretty and the perfect length; Not too short but not too long. And it’s simple enough that I can just throw on a cardigan with it and look charming. I think my mother picked it up for three dollars at a second hand store she volunteers at.

Eagerly I tried out the orange from the pallet I bought recently. It’s so lovely and a lot more neutral than I thought. I think I’ll be able to use this in a lot more looks than I originally thought. It’s going to be great for Halloween.

Outfit:

Dress: Second-hand
Shoes: Cotton-on.
Cardigan: Thrifted.
Stockings: No, idea. I’ve literally just been throwing on what ever stockings I can find.

Best wishes,
-Sary Walrus

Poll of the Week: Trad-Goth.

Link – A young Dave Vanian, lead singer of The Damned and my newest celebrity crush.

Recently I was reading a series of articles on The History of Deathrock, which you can find here, here and here, plus some articles on Post-Punk which brought up a question. Did Trad-Goth music (in which I mean Post-Punk/Positive Punk and earlier Goth Rock) die in the late eighties to the rise of electronic bands? Personally I would say no, I listen to and love this style of music and am always trying to expand my knowledge of it but there are a lot of younger (which is strange because I’m only eighteen) alternative people that don’t even understand the term post-punk yet are trying to make video’s and the like on Goth Rock and other such genres.

This is becoming a bit of a rant so I’ll cut to the chase: Do you enjoy Trad-Goth/Post-Punk/Early Goth Bands?

  • Yes.
  • No.
  • What is that?

Iif you believe there should be another option in the post post below why and if you have an opinion on whether Trad-Goth is dead I would love to hear your opinion.

Outfit post: Red and black and just a little bit different.

Well, as most of you know that (or maybe not since I’ve only been alluding to it) that I’ve been stuck in a high waisted skirt rut. It’s so easy to put on a blouse and a high waisted loose skirt and look nice. Obviously, I’m trying to break this rut and use more of the skirts that I leave in my cupboards all day.

Outfit:

Cardigan: My mums. I borrowed it when my other cardigan was in the wash.
Blouse: Second hand from my aunty. It’s a size too big for me but it seems moderately fine. The stomach is just a little annoying – it has something to do with my hips being too wide or the buttons being too spaced.
Ribbon: Laying about my room.
Skirt: GLP, a long time ago, from Goth Angel.
Stockings: Kmart, or the like. I swear, these are my only pair of un-ripped stockings. Mostly because I never wear them, they’re a bit too short.
Shoes: My plane ol’ school shoes from Kmart.

There wont be any Poll of the Week, this week. Sorry about that! I start back at school tomorrow and will have no time. I’m considering making it a two week thing – It’s actually quite time consuming and I feel I can come up with better articles if I have more time to think about what you might like to hear! But enough of my justification.

Best wishes,
-SaryWalrus

Monthly Theme: Outfit

Completely make up free. Oh, the horror.

This is a post for Sophisticated Noir’s Monthly theme post. This months theme, if you haven’t already heard, is outerwear! It was quite chilly today amazingly since it’s mid summer here in Australia and I gladly took advantage of that!

I was looking through my mothers wardrobe for kittens and spotted this lovely jacket. I didn’t take it at the time because that would have been so rude. Instead I brought it up later and she didn’t even know she had it!

The stripes are so small and come in a strange little pattern that makes me think of binary – to be perfectly honest. But I adore the buttons! There are two rows.

 Outfit:
Scarf: Given to me, possibly, years ago. It also has a massive brown spot where I burnt it while drying it next to our heater.

 Jacket: My mum’s wardrobe.

 Skirt: Self made.

Stockings: Purple and black/ Blue and black/ fishnet: Given to me, Kmert and Kmert.
I’m also wearing a frilly, sheer   blouse that was thrifted.
 Best wishes,

Trolls: A Brief (Honestly brief!) Explaination

Firstly, this is not a post to complain about trolls. This is not a post to invite trolls or to show off my trolling ability. It is merely a post to explain the act of trolling in a very basic form. You might be thinking, I know what trolling is! Everyone does! But honestly, the majority, or maybe it’s just the teens do not and then have no intention of looking up what it actually is but rely on what brief explanations have been handed to them.

Defintion:
A troll is generally as Wikipedia puts it, “someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response, or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.” So basically, someone who says something ONLINE with the intent to make someone rage or in more literary term, show a progressively growing emotion.

Bad Trolls:
This is my opinion, and A LOT of other peoples opinions, of course, as good and bad is only as truthful to the person saying it. A bad troll is someone who uses the most basic and obvious ways to enrage someone or upset someone. For instance:

BAD TROLL: “You’re such a slut.”
Angsts Ridden Teenage Girl: “HURRHURRRHURRHURR”
BAD TROLL: Trolololol.

HURR: Roughly translates (In my own language) into a summary of a combination of whining, complaining but in a very basic, dramatic and easily intended form and yes I do it myself often.

Good Trolls:
A good troll (In my opinion) is someone who is sneaky and at the least a little bright. This is a troll who uses out of context posts, sneakily hypocritical statements and the like. I was going to include an example of a good troll, but to be completely honest, could not find a single one.

The like: If you haven’t already noticed, is used as a ‘and so on” or “insert other examples here” way.

Am I being trolled right now?
Some would argue that I’m being trolled right now by all of the bad trolls out there. I however would disagree. Some people are just complete idiots. But who knows?
